I am therefore writing up a report of the most commonly walked circuit involving Lochnagar. They were ok with us just letting them know so there was no need for us to do anything different. Headed up to Glen Muick on Sunday with Simon Jenkins and decided to run a circuit of all the munros in the area. The OS maps don't hint at the boulderfield east of Broad Cairn's summit - the direct route is down this with a path appearing and disappearing - this could be tricky for tired legs ! We took a very soggy summit selfie and headed down to retrieve our bags and head to where we planned to camp. All around we could see the snow on all the mountains and it was absolutely stunning. With the walking being predominantly on grassy terrain and little re-ascent between the summits, this route also makes for a fine introduction to multi-Munro bagging. We had originally planned this to be the extent of our day, bailing out down by the Dubh Loch or by a return round by Lochnagar and the Glas Allt path down by the waterfalls to Loch Muick. Ascent: 1350m. The other summits are less characterful, but many discoveries are made when roaming over them, including wildlife, waterfalls and plane-wreckage. The path becomes more obvious as it loses height. eventually it steepened again and we climbed on to the summit plateau…. I was not particularly keen to write-up another report for Lochnagar but on checking previous reports they all involve taking in Munro Tops or also other Munros. Carn an t-Sagairt Mor's summit has two cairns (the southern one indicates the highest point) from where excellent views are to be had on clear days. Further on, the path veers off left - for views I'd recommend sticking to a fainter path on the edge of the coire - it heads up more directly and looks into the coire below. We set off at a leisurely pace towards the second summit, Carn a’Choire Bhoidheach but it felt like a long way in the rain. An alternative would be to retrace steps west from Broad Cairn's summit and look left for faint path heading south - this then turns eastwards and by-passes most of the boulderfield and joins up with the path coming through it. This was a real effort of a walk, a very long day, and it also included another Munro, Carn a’ Choir Bhoidheach. Terrain: Mixed terrain ranging from excellent paths to extremely boggy between munros 2 and 3 on the circuit. The next two Munro summits - Carn a’ Choire Bhoidheach and Carn an t-Saigart Mor - are easily won in decent visibility, nothing more than a stroll with gentle rises to rounded tops. The bealach between Carn an t-Sagairt Mor and Cairn Bannoch is approached where terrain is more gentle and grass covered. It works out at about 25 - 30km for the full circuit from Broad Cairn round to Lochnagar (starting and finishing at the car park). In summer the car-parks can be full. From the col we climbed steeply up to reach the east end of the Lochnagar range where we followed the escarpment line of the cliffs to firstly reach Cac Cairn Mor (1150m) and then shortly after Cac Cairn Beag, the Munro summit at 1155m or 3,789ft. A tip of ours for wildcamping is to pack a kids magazine to keep little ones busy while you’re having to do the inevitable stuff around camp, like cook dinner, fetch water etc. Carn a’ Choire Bhoidheach – 1110m.
